The most flexible, powerful, and well developed functionality in Firefox that is absent from Internet Explorer is called the Firefox 'extension.' These extensions act as modular programs intended to integrate with the existing functionality of a typical web browser, while at the same time enhancing or expanding it in some way. Basically, if there is a specific feature that the public wants that isn't contained in the normal installation, the community of open source software developers across the world use the internet to collaborate on an extension which will provide that functionality. In many cases though, the extension can be developed and completed by a single individual. The open source nature of the software is what makes this possible; it means that whoever so wishes can examine and indeed change the mechanics of the code which makes up the software itself. This encourages continued development, and helps to ensure that the software will meet the needs of its users long into the future with little further input from the initial developers of the browser.
